Whether you’re aiming for a full-scale project with substantial funding, trying out our new hardware Dev Kit early access, building quick “Abilities” for cash bounties, or simply joining our community to show off a cool prototype, we’ve got you covered.
Your Path to Innovation and Impact
Our unified program offers several tiers and opportunities, so you can jump in wherever you feel comfortable. You can mix and match these programs based on your experience, goals, and needs.
Tier 1: Community Launchpad (Focus: Social Presence & Engagement)
What You Do:
Join the official OpenHome Discord and introduce yourself.
Follow OpenHome on X (Twitter), Linkedin, or Instagram and post about your project, tagging us.
Submit a brief project concept overview to chris@openhome.xyz and get approval.
What You Get:
Grant: $100 initial grant to kick things off.
Access: Special community Q&A sessions, documentation, and early previews.
Dev Kit Eligibility: Apply for the OpenHome Dev Kit at this stage. Acceptance doesn’t affect your Tier 1 grant and gives you advanced hardware for future development.
Purpose:
Tier 1 helps you connect with our community, build your public presence, and start generating buzz around your idea. It’s all about sharing your vision and establishing trust before diving deeper.
Tier 2: Prototype Spotlight (Focus: MVP Demo & Open Source)
What You Do:
Create a working MVP integrated with OpenHome—this can be purely software-based or incorporate the OpenHome Dev Kit for a physical, voice-enabled demonstration.
Record a short demo video (e.g. Loom video would work) showing real usage scenarios and email it to chris@openhome.xyz
Provide updates in Discord’s #general channel and post your MVP video.
What You Get:
Grant: Additional $200 once your demo video is approved.
Visibility: Featured in our “Developer Spotlight” newsletter and social channels.
Purpose:
Tier 2 rewards tangible progress. By showcasing a working prototype, you prove feasibility and inspire others. If you have the Dev Kit, it also lets you demonstrate real-world potential, moving from concept to creation.
Beyond the Tiers: Expand Your Opportunities
OpenHome Dev Kit (Early Access)
Turn any Bluetooth speaker into an AI-powered, voice-enabled device. Early access to this $200+ value kit is available at no cost for accepted applicants. Your feedback helps shape our official launch in early 2025, and puts you at the forefront of voice-enabled hardware innovation.
Up to $50,000 in Developer Grants
Got a big idea that goes beyond a simple MVP? Apply for our main Developer Grant Program. Qualifying projects can receive up to $50,000 in funding, and $15,000 in AWS credits. Just show your ability to innovate, engage with the community, and deliver results. Learn more.
Abilities Bounties ($250+ per Ability)
Not ready to commit to a full project? You can still earn money by building Abilities—modular “plugins” that add functionalities like weather checks, calendar syncing, or smart home controls to OpenHome Personalities. Each published, approved Ability earns you $250. Need more funding to build a complex Ability? Just ask!

How to Get Started
Join the Community (Tier 1):
Start at Tier 1 by joining our Discord and social channels. Introduce yourself and share your project concept to chris@openhome.xyz.
Move to Prototype (Tier 2):
Build an MVP demo, open-source your code, and show it off in a short video (posted to our discord and emailed to chris@openhome.xyz). Earn an additional $200 and gain visibility.
Expand and Apply for Grants or Dev Kit Access:
If you’re ready to scale up, apply for our Developer Grant Program for up to $50,000 in support.
Or just interested hardware, no problem, apply for early access to the OpenHome Dev Kit.
Build Abilities for Quick Cash:
Add modular features (Abilities) to OpenHome Personalities and earn $250 for each one you publish that meets our guidelines.
Timeline and Next Steps
Now: Apply for community access (Tier 1), publish Abilities, and request the Dev Kit.
Ongoing: Progress through Tier 2 to show a working MVP, apply for a full grant, or builty an ability though our bounty program.
Early 2025: Official launch of the OpenHome Dev Kit with refined features, fueled by your feedback.
